I did not know Stephen well. So sad losing someone with a rich life and so much talent at a relatively young age.

Stephen was born on November 1, 1951 and passed away in June 1992.

Stephen was a resident of Lagunitas, California.

STEPHEN F. GEHL

Stephen Francis Gehl, a tennis champion and orchestra violinist, died Monday, June 22, 1992, at his uncle’s Lagunitas home following a lengthy illness. He was 40.

Mr. Gehl was a native of San Francisco, where he graduated from Lowell High School and San Francisco State University.

He played violin for the San Francisco Ballet orchestra and served as concertmaster for numerous theater productions, including “Les Miserables,” “Cats” and others.

Mr. Gehl also performed in the Carmel Bach Festival and worked in musical production at George Lucas’ Skywalker Ranch in Marin County.

He was a 20-year member of American Federation of Musicians Local 6 and was active in Mensa Society.

An avid tennis player, Mr. Gehl was a division winner in past San Francisco city championships.

He is survived by his uncle, Art Holman of Lagunitas, and two sisters, Moira Abrahams of Sacramento and Anna Gehl of San Francisco.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Monday at the Chapels of Arthur J. Sullivan & Co. in San Francisco.

Stephen and I were regular tennis partners in the late 1980s.  He regularly won the game on the court and won the political argument off the court.  I miss him.
